Michigan marijuana regulators are missing an opportunity to enhance transparency for consumers. For years, a segment of the marijuana industry has sought increased transparency, particularly regarding consumers’ ability to ascertain whether the marijuana they purchase has failed safety testing or has been subjected to a decontamination process known as remediation.

The Cannabis Regulatory Agency has yet to embrace mandatory labeling, leaving Michigan’s marijuana consumers in the dark about crucial testing processes. Each batch of cannabis undergoes rigorous examination to identify issues such as excessive yeast, mold, fungi, pesticides, metals, and other contaminants. The findings of these tests have significant health and quality implications, yet this vital information remains largely undisclosed to customers.

Although Michigan does not release safety testing results, various labs and national studies suggest that as much as 30% of marijuana may initially fail testing, primarily due to high levels of mold or mildew, with very little ending up in the trash.
