Not So Fast, Researchers Say

While it is widely accepted that there is a connection between marijuana use and video gaming, recent reviews of existing research indicate that this relationship is more complex than it appears. Although numerous studies have reported a positive correlation between cannabis consumption and gaming, others have identified either a negative association or found no significant impact at all.

The recent scientific review published this month in the Journal of Behavioral Addictions examined 25 articles on the topic from 2000 to 2025 and suggests that the statistical variability surrounding any link between gaming and marijuana consumption is likely a result of the inconsistent methods used to measure both cannabis use and video game engagement.

The report highlights compelling reasons for curiosity, as video gaming and marijuana use are notably common among adolescents and young adults, serving as sedentary activities that many utilize for relaxation and stress relief.

But findings of the review were mixed.

“Results demonstrate that existing literature is heterogenous in its methods and mixtures,” the report says. “Nonetheless, evidence suggests that a relationship does exist.”

“The majority of studies did find a positive relationship between VG and cannabis use,” it continues, “although several studies also found no significant relationship, and a few even found a negative relationship.”

While numerous anecdotal reports have long indicated a connection between marijuana and gaming communities, the new paper highlights that scientific exploration of this relationship remains in its early stages.
