Sales of legal marijuana in Michigan generated $266.2 million in tax revenue during the most recent fiscal year, surpassing the combined tax revenue from the sale of beer, wine, and liquor. A new report from the legislature’s nonpartisan House Fiscal Agency highlights the significant contribution of the marijuana industry to the state’s finances.

Tax revenue from sales of adult-use cannabis saw a significant surge of 49.1% in fiscal year 2022–23, concluding in October. This remarkable increase brought in an impressive $87.6 million in additional state revenue, surpassing the $178.6 million collected in the previous year. Such growth signifies the thriving market for cannabis sales, solidifying its positive impact on the economy over the past 12 months.

Among all the tax revenues analyzed in last week’s House Fiscal Agency report, cannabis revenue witnessed the most rapid growth and they still want more.
